How This Word Counter Works
The counter runs entirely in your browser and updates with every keystroke — nothing you type is transmitted or stored anywhere. Words are counted the same way Microsoft Word and Google Docs count them: any run of characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks is one word, so hyphenated terms like "well-known" count once and numbers like "2026" count as words. Characters are counted both with and without spaces, since different platforms and assignments specify different rules. Sentences are detected from ending punctuation (periods, exclamation marks, question marks), and paragraphs from line breaks.
Reading time divides your word count by 238 words per minute — the average adult silent reading speed established by a 2019 meta-analysis of 190 reading studies. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and speeches.
